When Abraham lifted his eyes to the stars, God revealed that through him the entire world would be blessed. That fulfillment came through Jesus who gave himself for the world, opening up a way toward relationship.

You can see the fulfillment here in Matthew 1:1-2. “This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.”

We’ll learn about Isaac tomorrow. But for today, remember this: God’s unfolding salvation plan culminated in sending his Son, Jesus, to earth. We celebrate that coming this Christmas.

I’m worn out from being underestimated in my car

I’m worn out from being underestimated in my career. I am a strong writer. I always turn in my books early. I am an engaged speaker. I work very hard. I am empowered to speak about Jesus and his healing ways.

It’s a difficult thing for me to say these things (about talent and worth), but as someone who has put words to paper and speeches (messages, sermons) for decades now, it does no one favors for me to shrink back.

Have you ever felt this way? Do people in your field underestimate you? Does it happen to you in ministry?

Today I felt my voice rise up in me. I recounted this verse: But if I say I’ll never mention the LORD or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it! (Jeremiah 20:9).

I don’t need your permission or the blessing of gatekeepers. It’s time for me (with the strength God provides in my weakness) to stand, to speak, to write. Full on. Come what may.

The fire inside is weary of being contained.

#maxinesbaby is replaying my life.

Imagination in the midst of trauma.

Dissociation during sexual abuse.

Finding safe places (like a utility shed) where I fled when I was afraid.

Imaginary friend when I was isolated and alone.

The need to create.

The ability to write fast.

The working so very hard.

The past haunting you.

The empathy for those who suffer.

The longing to help fellow victims.

The soul pain.

The excruciating healing journey.

The father wounds that still scar me.

The longing for Jesus.

The worship in the joy and in the pain.

Thinking I wouldn’t amount to much, but with an underlying, driving ambition.

Hitting the wall in my career too many times to count and choosing to try again.

The hearing from God in my twenties, calling me to communicate.

I’m so glad I’m not alone, but I’m sad there are others who suffered childhood trauma. Thank you for persevering. Thank you for working through your pain in order to help others. Thank you for doing the inner work. Thank you for giving words to the traumatic. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for authenticity and truth. Thank you for providing safe spaces.

All: your life matters. The trauma is not wasted. Showing up and persevering is spiritual warfare. Your freedom journey emancipates others. Keep going. Be loved, beloved.

I kept my yearly Christmas brunch small this year. It seemed fitting in a season of letting go.

Every year I ask my friends a question. This year’s was: “What are you afraid of as you consider new levels of obedience?”

For me it’s trusting God in the midst of a sea change. And already it’s been terrible and beautiful. You can have joy and grief mixed together, right?

Jesus’s birth, life, death, and resurrection mea

Jesus’s birth, life, death, and resurrection meant a reversal of the garden’s effects. Jesus came to vanquish the enemy of our souls.

We see this delineated in 1 John 3:8. “But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.”

The good news is that he is now roaming the earth as a defeated foe. And one day he will be gone forever.

These past few weeks have been difficult. Evil is terribly real. My prayers have leaned toward desperate, yet at the same time, my soul is tired and numb from the fight. Have you ever felt that way? Do you feel that way now? The truth is Jesus fights powerfully on your behalf. He is greater than the evil in this world. He is a helper to the helpless, a shoulderer of burdens, a gentle friend, and a warrior in your stead. Yes, even during this Advent season. Rest in that, friend.

Every day until Christmas, I’ll be sharing my advent paintings. Each fills in the blank, Jesus is __________. I’m primarily looking at the harmony of Scripture between the Old and New Testaments, prophesy proclaimed and fulfilled around Christ’s birth and life.

My hope is that these little minutes of time will help you find solace, peace, and focus as you celebrate Emmanuel, God gloriously with us.

Today we see the eternal nature of Jesus found in John 1:1. John writes it poetically, which seems befitting for such an attribute.

In the beginning, the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.

I find comfort in the eternal-ness of Jesus. That leads to his power, omniscience, and everlasting love. And the outrageousness of incarnation, that God would dwell among us. I’m praying that audacity would sink in. That’s his eternal, surprising love in action.
