It’s a rare occasion when I devour, love and become wildly affectionate about a movie. Last night, Patrick and I finished watching North and South. (BBC’s adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s book.) Here’s a blurb about it from Netflix:

You Have to Rent this Movie: North and South
January 25, 2008
When her father uproots his family from their serene rural burg for an industrial mill town, parson’s daughter Margaret Hale (Daniela Denby-Ashe) struggles to adapt to her harsh new surroundings in this BBC series based on Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel. As her mother’s health fails, Margaret throws herself into the fight for workers’ rights and clashes with mill owner John Thornton (Richard Armitage). Sinead Cusack and Tim Pigott-Smith co-star.
Storyline: complicated, surprising
Characters: Spot on. These were the least cookie cutter characters I’d experienced on the big screen (well, the screen of my husband’s laptop).
If you’re striving for subtlety and beauty in your storytelling, rent this movie. Savor it. And let me know what you think.
