Write your own Psalm!

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m reading through some old blog posts. This one caught my eye because I feel lately like I’m facing my own Red Sea. And it’s time to grab a pen and write my own psalm of deliverance. I pray this wee little instruction blog sets you afire (in a good way) as you express your heart to God.

So go ahead, grab a pen, and write your own psalm. Then pray it aloud, seeking solace with our God who loves to deliver us.

I had the privilege of teaching through Exodus 15 this week. And in doing so, I realized we could write our own Psalm of Deliverance. Let’s start by listening to Moses’ words about God’s deliverance of Israel through the Red Sea:

One of the things I enjoy doing is drawing New Testament parallels to the Old Testament.

Here are some very interesting correlations.

• Exodus 15 talks about God’s mighty right hand. In the New Testament, Jesus is at God’s right hand. (Acts 2:33, Hebrews 12:2).

• Egypt is seen as Israel’s enslaving power. In the New Testament, we see descriptions of Satan as a similar destroyer and thiefl (John 10:10). It’s important to make the distinction that our battle isn’t against people (Ephesians 6:10-12), but against the evil forces at work in the world.

• Just as God conquered Israel’s enemy, Jesus conquered His enemy and ours on the cross. (Hebrews 2:14-18, 1 John 3:8)

• Just as the Egyptian army was cast into the sea, Satan will be cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:10)

There are many sweet takeaways from this passage:

• God sees.

• God is big.

• God is just.

• His timing seems slow, but it’s perfect.

• You don’t need to fear.

• God delivers us from enemies.

• God loves and cares for us.

• Our job is to surrender to His plan, His ways, His deliverance, and then choose to praise and worship Him.

Now it’s your turn. Here’s how to write your own Psalm of Deliverance:

(This takes directly from the structure of Exodus 15).

I will ___________ (how you’ll worship God).

The Lord is ________ (His attributes in your current situation.)

Satan has wanted to _____________(how he has bothered/hurt/accused).

But God is ________ (statement about God’s power).

Satan has reminded me ____________.(lies he’s said.)

But God has reminded me __________.(God’s truth about me).

Now God will ___________(statement about what God is doing/will do)

because God is _____________ (more attributes of God).
