What is my life?

Annie Dillard said these deep, yet simple words:

“How we live our days is . . . how we live our lives.”

Think about that a minute or two or sixty.

Unfortunately for me, there are two Marys. One Mary who wishes to live a radical life, a life of great dependence on Jesus Christ, a life of deep connection with others, a life of unfettered worship. Then there’s Reality Mary, the Mary of the daily life. She’s not all that. She’s terribly needy, ordinary, besetted, and flimsy.

But if Annie is right, the fundamental place we change is in our daily lives. It’s the moment by moment decisions we make for or against the will of Jesus in our lives.

Here’s a question for you (for me): What in your life today forces you to truly, truly place faith in Jesus?

Another set of questions: Do you live your life in such a way that you don’t need Jesus? In other words, do you have everything pretty much managed and under control so that you don’t really need Him? When was the last time you stepped out into scary unknown territories, or risked ridicule?

Oh, I have become complacent folks. And my daily choices seem to add up to comfort and my own security. Dear, dear Jesus please forgive me.

As I write this, I’m listening to “Alive in this moment” by Starfield. How convicting and beautiful the words:

Alive In This Moment

It’s been so long since I have met You here
Since I have said these words or cried these tears
And like a child would come I run into our secret place
And as the music fades, the tears are rolling down my face

I am alive in this moment
In this moment I am found
I am alive in this moment
In this moment I belong

It’s been so long since I have met You here
Since I have heard You speak or let You near
And like a wayward son I’ve come with nothing left to hide
Here in this moment I have come to offer up my life

Here only one fire burns, it burns
Here only one melody is heard
Once again for the very first time
My eyes are opening

You can listen to the entire song here.

All we have is right now. This moment with Jesus. My prayer is that my days constitute my life, that the expanse of them spell JESUS. How about you?
