005 – Yanci McGregor

Feb 29, 2016Restory Show

I’m grateful to have my friend Yanci McGregor with us on today’s Restory Show.

How Our Stories Intersected

I first met Yanci through her husband Chris because our church has a relationship with City Church in Montreal, Canada. This last summer, we got to spend time together, sharing our hearts and our lives. That evening, I had the privilege of speaking to a small group from City Church where I shared my story, then prayed for the women there. I walked away from that intimate event overjoyed because God simply showed up.

About Yanci’s Story

Yanci is a Texas girl, through and through, now transplanted to chilly Montreal. She is a worship leader, a mom of two hockey-playing boys, and a church planters wife. She met her husband Chris while they both attended Dallas Theological Seminary right around the time my husband Patrick attended there. After she married, she eventually got pregnant, then came face to face with postpartum depression. She shares very honestly (and passionately) about how that story has affected her and her family. I know you will be deeply encouraged.

In Her Own Words

“But I’m the one who everyone says has a great smile. How can I be depressed?”

“I spent a lot of time crying out to God asking why, what do you want me to do?”

“It’s just an amazing thing that God put in my heart. He gave me a heart for Canada, and I think it came through Chris’s family.”

“Why can’t I just think myself out of this?”

“I’ve been really working on giving myself the freedom to say that I am depressed, I have depression. I have to be kind to myself. If I’m feeling tired, I’m going to give myself time to rest…and not make myself feel guilty over that.”

“God is opening up doors to be able to talk with other people wrestling with depression.”

Restory Recap

  • Depression is hard and scary and painful, and there’s a lot of misinformation about it, especially in the church.
  • God is God and you are not.
  • It’s okay to admit your sufferings. Give yourself permission to grieve, to rest, to mourn.
  • We don’t necessarily have an answer to why we suffer, but God’s greatest desire is for us to love and worship Him. God longs for our worship even during our suffering.
  • Jesus has empathy for us.
  • Depression can be a gateway to choose Jesus and His strength.

As in all my episodes, I pray for you at the end. It’s my sincere hope that you’ll walk away from the Restory Show changed and challenged.

{Aside: Yanci used to be Miss Texas!}
