This week I’ll be vacationing with my sweet family. Hooray! The beach awaits! While I’m there, we’re going to chat the next few days about parenting and families.

What is the best piece of parenting advice you’ve received?
A lady stopped me in the supermarket when my toddlers were melting down and I was about to cry a river right by the egg section. “It goes so fast. Cherish them,” she said. Whenever I got overstressed, I remembered that and tried to slow down enough to enjoy my kids. I still can’t believe they’re all teens!
What was the worst?
It wasn’t one specific thing, but just the idea that if I followed Dr. Parenting Expert’s perfect advice, I’d naturally have awesome kids. There is no formula. Anyone trying to tell you that is selling you something.
What did you most fear you’d pass on to your children?
I feared they’d gain my inattention. It’s very hard for me to connect. I’ve had to make it a point to deeply enter my kids’ lives. So far they have all been great connectors and have proven to be much more connected than I ever was at their lives.
What has been the best thing you’ve done as a parent?
Read to my kids when they were younger.
What is the greatest thing your children have taught you?
To forgive myself, and that I’m lovable. Those kids flat out love me.
What surprised you most?
How satisfying it was to watch my eldest go off to college. I thought I’d be a wreck. Sure, there were tears, but mostly I felt so proud of her, so thankful for the person she was becoming.
