Guest Post: Susan Greenwood, “Overwhelmed.”

A huge thanks to Susan Greenwood for her post about being overwhelmed. I’m sure you can relate (I can!).

It is easy to become overwhelmed by our circumstances; but what about being overwhelmed by the power and the presence of the living God.

My junior year of college came with some tough circumstances. I had two people I was very close to die within a month of each other. I remember standing in a room full of people feeling completely alone. I closed my eyes and asked God to let me feel His presence and know that He was there. Immediately I felt this tingling surge run through my body and all I could do was cry. I was engulfed in the presence and power of our holy God.
I refer to that moment as when God hugged me.

I was overwhelmed and it was awesome!

The children of Israel were often overwhelmed by their circumstances and they had many. In their journey from slavery there were many circumstances between them and the land God promised them. After witnessing the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, manna from Heaven, the cloud and the fire to lead them, the shoes that never wore out and water from a rock, they still grumbled and worried and doubted. They were so overwhelmed by their circumstances that they missed being overwhelmed by the power of God.

Recently I had the privilege of once again being truly overwhelmed by the power, presence and provision of God. My husband and I have been praying hard about some decisions we feel God is presenting to us. If we let ourselves, we get overwhelmed with the uncertainty of the details; however, God keeps interjecting and reminding us He’s in control. His power lives in the heart and lives of His people. It is the same power used to create the world from nothing, part the Red Sea, shut the door of the ark and send the earth cleansing flood. It is the same power that hung on the cross of Calvary and defeated death three days later. His way is perfect and complete leaving us free to be overwhelmed by Him.

Psalm 46:10

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
