Free to be…me? {Awesome guest post by Kristen Evensen}

Aug 17, 2012Heal from the past

I’m thrilled to have Kristen Leigh Evensen here today. She’s an actor, singer, dancer and musician (whew!). She blogs here.  She tackles the important question: What does it mean to be truly free? But I’ll let her take it from here…

The idea of “freedom” runs rampant in the human spirit.  Everyone desires it: the release, the letting-go of oneself, despite a culture that threatens to conform, control, and regulate with its demands and pressures.  According to the dictionary definition, “freedom” is personal liberty, as opposed to bondage or slavery.

A few years ago, I found myself asking what was the true meaning of freedom.  All around me, people attempted to live out their so-called “freedom”, yet their choices only ended in heartache, emptiness, materialism, and a longing for more.

This did not sound like genuine freedom to me.  Ironically, it sounded like bondage.

I began asking the Lord to reveal to me what true freedom meant.  What did God mean when He said that He came to “set the captives free?”

One day, it occurred to me that to live in freedom meant being transformed into all God intended me to be when He created me.

But who does God intend us to be?  What freedom did God instill in us when He created us?

Ephesians 2:10-11 gives us some insight: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

God created us anew so that we can do His will.  Living in God’s will brings freedom.

Freedom from riches.  Freedom from fame.  Freedom from expectations.  Freedom from the worldly pressures and desires.  Freedom from less than God’s best.  Freedom to be all we were intended to be!

I sometimes think that living in God’s will is easier said than done.  I am stubborn, resistant, and controlling at times, and there are moments when I am convinced that taking my own path is surely a better choice.  However, God promises that His will is best for us.  And who does not want the best?  I know I do.

Today, live in the freedom that you are His, created in Jesus to live out His will for your life.  Bask in the true freedom that God’s will promises!

How has God impressed His freedom upon you?
