Forgetting who is Before You

Jan 31, 2006Find joy today

It struck me the other day as I was reading about Moses. He approaches some shrubbery aflame. God speaks, tells him to take off his shoes. “Holy ground,” He says.

So Moses is standing before a glimpse of the glory of God. Right there. In bare feet. God’s telling him that he’ll stand before pharaoh and Moses quakes. “I can’t stand before pharaoh,” he says. “What if he doesn’t believe You sent me?”

What struck me was the standing before phraseology. Here was Moses STANDING BEFORE GOD and yet he worried about standing before a mere man.

What are your fears today? Who do you fear? Who in your life is bigger than God, or, better put, who in your life have you magnified over God because of your own fears and insecurities?

Fast forward history from Moses to today. Those who follow Jesus don’t stand before God; in an amazingly wonderful paradox, the very presence of God, through the work of the Holy Spirit, LIVES INSIDE US.

Who shall we fear? If you find yourself more afraid of someone than you are of God, pray this verse today:

“From my distress I called upon the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me in a large place. The Lord is for me; I will not fear; what can man do to me? The Lord is for me among those who help me; therefore I will look with satisfaction on those who hate me. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes” (Psalm 118:5-9).
