“Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants [seed] after him.” Genesis 17:19

I portrayed Isaac as laughing because that’s what his name meant. When his mother Sarah found out her aging body would carry a baby, she laughed out loud.

I can imagine if your name means laughter, you would not only be a child of promise, but a person of joviality.

Interesting parallel: Sarah had an impossible pregnancy in her old age. The Virgin Mary had an impossible pregnancy in her teen years. Both carried a promised one, the second being a descendant of the first. And the second one saving us from the weight of sin.

When Abraham lifted his eyes to the stars, God revealed that through him the entire world would be blessed. That fulfillment came through Jesus who gave himself for the world, opening up a way toward relationship.

You can see the fulfillment here in Matthew 1:1-2. “This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.”

We’ll learn about Isaac tomorrow. But for today, remember this: God’s unfolding salvation plan culminated in sending his Son, Jesus, to earth. We celebrate that coming this Christmas.

Jesus’s birth, life, death, and resurrection mea

Jesus’s birth, life, death, and resurrection meant a reversal of the garden’s effects. Jesus came to vanquish the enemy of our souls.

We see this delineated in 1 John 3:8. “But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.”

The good news is that he is now roaming the earth as a defeated foe. And one day he will be gone forever.

These past few weeks have been difficult. Evil is terribly real. My prayers have leaned toward desperate, yet at the same time, my soul is tired and numb from the fight. Have you ever felt that way? Do you feel that way now? The truth is Jesus fights powerfully on your behalf. He is greater than the evil in this world. He is a helper to the helpless, a shoulderer of burdens, a gentle friend, and a warrior in your stead. Yes, even during this Advent season. Rest in that, friend.

Every day until Christmas, I’ll be sharing my advent paintings. Each fills in the blank, Jesus is __________. I’m primarily looking at the harmony of Scripture between Old and New testaments, prophesy proclaimed and fulfilled around Christ’s birth and life.

My hope is that these little minutes of time will help you find solace, peace, and focus as you celebrate Emmanuel, God gloriously with us.

Today we see the eternal nature of Jesus found in John 1:1. John writes it poetically, which seems befitting for such an attribute.

In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.

I find comfort in the eternal-ness of Jesus. That leads to his power, omniscience, and everlasting love. And the outrageousness of incarnation, that God would dwell among us. I’m praying that audacity would sink in. That’s his eternal, surprising love in action.

My friend @revjohnnydouglas had a lengthy post on his story this morning, and, in it, a phraseology like this caught me, stayed with me.

I may grieve, yes, but it will not be an eternal grief. It’s simply a precursor to joy. Death comes before resurrection, after all.

Somehow that gives me hope on this cold winter Sunday. The pain is temporary. It cannot grip me forever, though it’s a pass through—we must venture through grief, not circumventing it, not stuffing it, not denying it, not feigning obliviousness.

I pray this is helpful. The way is through but it does not end darkly. Tears will be brushed away. Pain will cease. Life comes from death. All will be well. Hope wins.
