Heal from the past, Work Uncaged

Say No. Rest.

14 Comments 17 July 2012

“I shall run in the way of Your commandments for you will enlarge my heart.” Psalm 119:32, NASB

My friend listened as I detailed my busy-laden days, how stressed out I felt. “What do you really want to do?” she asked.

“I want to be a great wife and mother. And I want to write,” I said.

“Then you’re going to have to say no to the peripheral things. You can’t keep going at this pace. You need rest.”
Tears threatened. I knew my friend’s words were the truth just as I knew God was calling me to edit my life by saying no. Or better still, to let God be the Editor, giving Him control to trim my life as He pleased.

I knew I’d been running on the to-do list treadmill, avoiding the still, small voice of God. Because of frenetic activity, my heart shriveled. Finding true rest meant letting God enlarge my heart by giving up my own control for the sake of His, saying no to what seemed important so I could rest. To let Him be big and the circumstances of life be small.

In Mark Buchanan’s The Rest of God, he writes, “If God can take any mess, any mishap, any wastage, any wreckage, any anything, and choreograph beauty and meaning from it, then you can take a day off” (p. 63).

I’ve invited Him to take control, to give me the strength to say no. My heart’s grown, and I’ve found rest.

What about you? When has God told you to rest? What did you do? When has rest blessed you?

i like the idea of God enlarging our hearts. i see that as He makes it bigger and we’re more able to take in what He’s trying to give us.

The Rest of God is such a soul-refreshing book. I was really challenged by the idea that God brought the Israelites out of Egypt where they’d been slaves, and gave them a day off — to show how much better a Master He is. And yet we put ourselves back into 7-day slavery.

This blessed me! I often think those same words, “I want to be a great wife and mother and I want to write.” It sounds simple but gets muddled so easily. Thanks for the reminder to rest in Christ. As for when God has told me to rest. A cardiac arrest gave me a pretty clear message. :)

Yes, Ocieanna, I would say cardiac arrest would cause us all to pause. I’ve seen the fruit of that hard time in your life now. God is at work in you.

I love this notion. Yet I know for my own life understanding it and putting it into practice are two different things. Thanks for challenging us with these words, Mary. Thanks for sharing with us how God is working in your life. Always inspiring!

      Thanks Leslie! You rock!

I love Mark Buchanan’s books! And, yes, rest. There have been seasons in my life when I couldn’t squeeze everything on my to-do list into a 6-day week, and I had to spend Sundays getting “stuff” done too. I’ve since decided that if I can’t fully rest on the Sabbath, then that is the indicator I need, telling me to edit some of the commitments from my life. Great post, Mary.

Well said, Denise. There’s a great kernel of a blog post in your words.

Last week, actually :) . For the first time in 3 years, I skipped a blog day. Just because I wanted to take my kids to the bay and see a museum we’d all been looking forward to. It was AWESOME! My brain had a little trouble letting go… I’d blogged every Thursday for 150ish weeks! But it was a delicious break. Glad yours was too! And how did the weekend go with the transition? I was praying for you on the 15th, especially for peace.

Hooray! Good job! Well done. Thanks for the prayer. Peace abounds!

Ah, that Mark gets it right every time. Happy resting.
