Better in person

I spent this weekend, as I mentioned, in Oklahoma at a youth retreat. One of the things that struck me was the beauty of face to face ministry. As a writer who spends a lot of time behind a faceless, touchless computer screen, I was thankful for the reminder from God that ministry is about people. Face to face. In person.

I had the opportunity to pray with a few people there, and in that praying, I felt an overwhelming sense of God’s presence between each girl I prayed for and me. And then as I prayed, I felt as if God’s grief over her situation permeated me so much so that my weeping felt like God’s heart for her.

I couldn’t do that in cyberspace. I couldn’t so deeply identify with her pain. I couldn’t embrace her, speak words of consolation over her, or pray physically in her presence. No matter how much I embrace technology, I must say that ministry is better in person.
