The Inferiority Beast

The Inferiority Beast

Have you ever wrestled the inferiority beast? I have many times and found myself wanting in the aftermath.

I often perceive every. single. person. on. this. earth. as more important than me. Now this is good when I’m hoping to be Jesusy and kind and considering others better than myself. But it’s not good when I shrink back from being all that God created me to be.

I don’t see Jesus walking this earth with a cloud of inferiority hovering over him. He didn’t shrink back. He was comfortable in His own skin, happy to be Himself, self aware to the Nth degree. He was confident of God the Father’s affection of Him. And because He possessed this confidence, He joyfully took a towel and washed others’ feet.

So servanthood and confidence can hold hands.

Why do I struggle with this beast? I suppose it goes back to my past. Still, I can’t stay back there, can I? And neither can you. Whatever hangs over your head and makes you feel inferior is something in the past now. It’s not the great today. It doesn’t need to define you in this moment.

In this blessed moment, you are wildly loved by your Creator. He sent Jesus to die for you. He created you in your mother’s womb. He delights in you right now, even if you’re harboring bad thoughts, even if you struggle with sin, even if you’re not perfect, even when others seem to succeed in chasing their dreams and you don’t. None of that matters. What matters is your worth, which is bestowed on you by Jesus.

The inferiority beast is only as big and menacing as you allow it to be. The more you give into it, the more it grows. The more you listen to those awful voices telling you you’re nothing, the louder the voices get and the more you believe them.

Stop feeding that beast. Train your mind to believe the truth. And be set free from inferiority right now.

Now, to truly live that and take my own medicine!

Mary, this was an excellent post. I have battled at times with the inferiority beast. I allowed him to win on several occasions. But, this post help remind me that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I had to realize that I am not inferior, but I am a masterpiece that was shaped in the hands of the potter (God). I had made the inferiority beast bigger that what he actually. When I realized who I am in Christ the inferiority beast became a gnat. Thanks for reminding me again that through Christ I have victory over the inferiority beast.

Thanks, Mary, for pointing us, once again, to Jesus, that model of humility and confident servant leader :)

Great post Mary. I recently posted about being easily intimidated. Why do we let the world make us feel inferior when being a child of God is the most important characteristic we have? Here’s the link to my post for anyone who’d like to read it: http://celestialprescriptions.blogspot.com/2011/12/are-you-easily-intimidated.html

So true Mary! I struggle with this concept of servant hood and confidence…it doesn’t have to be one or the other. Just hard to remember sometimes :)

Good reminder of God’s reality … thanks, Mary.

At some point we all have to stop running, turn around, and kiss the monster (or the beast) on the nose!

Thanks for the encouraging thoughts. I’ll bet the “inferiority beast” stalks every writer — except perhaps, Stephen King! The “inferiority beast” has an official title “The Father of Lies.” He has been howling at my door as well, leading me to submit a post along similar lines (“It’s Too Late! Or Is It?” bethanymacklinministries.com/blog) especially in regards to “training” our mind not to listen to his debilitating lies. Let’s refuse to allow him to set the tone for the new year!

Forge ahead in your effective ministry of encouragement!

Hi, Mary! It’s been forever since I’ve visited your blog! My life has been cccrrrraaazzzyyy since I met you at She Speaks last July! :) Your Memoir 101 class was a real watershed moment for me. God spoke to me very clearly in that class that if I was going to tell my story like I know He wants me to, I would have to tell the WHOLE story and not skimp. So I’ve been living the final chapters of that story since that weekend. Still waiting on the ending, but starting the process all over again. I will have a whole new story to bring to She Speaks this year! Ironically it involves facing the past square in the face in order to fully heal. I guess there are times to move on and times to look back first before moving forward. May God grant the wisdom to know which one applies to us in the season we are in!

I pray that you have an AWESOME year this year, and I look forward to catching up with what you’ve been up to for the past 6 months! May it be your best year ever as you learn to live UNCAGED! :)

Great words of encouragement as I am embarking on a writing project full of fear that I’ll disappoint. I can do this!

I sure have an idea how you feel! I am facing a project that is very intimidating. But God spoke to me this morning and I’ll share it with you in hopes it will embolden you (as it has me) to move forward in faith. Ps. 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go…” In essence, “instruct” emphasizes WHAT to do, while “teach” hones in on HOW to do it. And God, in His “exceedingly abundantly” way of providing for us promises both! You are right, you can’t do it and neither can I, but God can–and will if we trust Him. :)
