Every entrepreneur needs a coach

Every entrepreneur needs a coach

Last week I let discouragement hug, then mug me. Physically, I just didn’t feel right. Though I work out and watch my diet, nothing seems to move that scale. And in my career, some frustrating things piled on top of me at once, darkening my perspective.

But two significant things happened that day that changed everything. Two coaches talked me out of the ditch.

I believe every entrepreneur needs a coach. Of folks who act like a coach and help you figure out where to go, what to do next, and how to withstand stress and discouragement. In this case for me, my “coaches” were my boot camp instructor, Kelley, and my agent, Esther.

Kelley didn’t know I needed a lift, yet she said some life giving words to me. She noticed when I ran faster. And she said I looked better, that she could see the difference my effort was making. This turned my frown upside down!

And Esther called me that day, reminding me how far I’d come, what good happened in the moment, and pressed me to anticipate a joyful future. She told me to keep going, to not be discouraged, that someday all this hard work would pay off. I hung up feeling ready to conquer the publishing world.

I also have a business coach who gives me better perspective and excellent advice. And an advisory board who has faithfully listened to my business dilemmas and helped me navigate them. And a prayer team who prays me through every single book I write.

The skinny: we can’t do this alone. We need coaches in our lives to see our blind spots, point out our victories, and kick us in the behind once in awhile.

What about you? Do you have a coach? Why or why not?

I do not have a professional coach, but my husband and a dear friend are great spiritual supporters.  My dear sister in Christ and I have embarked on the writing journey together.  Encouraging one another on the way as God has led us in friendship and in growth in writing.  She just had her novel accepted and sent to 85 possible publishers.  I am writing the blog, beginning a memoir, and have received a vision for a novel.  We met Friday and had lunch to spur one another on in the journey and celebrate her news.  God has given us each other as coaches for now.  I also have found myself in the midst of amazing people in the blogosphere such as you, Holley Gerth, and Bonnie the Faith barista.  I don’t subscribe to many blogs, but the ones I do offer a weight of encouragement and community that far outweighs a long list of subscriptions.  Through these encouraging souls, God’s voice coaches me not only in writing, but in counseling, in mothering, in running the race as a believer, and many other aspects of my life.

Hubby and friend: those are two awesome resources! And I agree. I see many bloggers as mentors.

My husband is probably my biggest coach right now. I would love to have a professional one, but he does a good job at encouraging me to press on!

      That is very cool.

I’m so intrigued to stumble upon this post today.  I’ve just started my coaching certification, because I so believe in the value of coaching.  I’ve been blessed by it, count on it, and look forward now to giving it.  Thanks!

Yes, you are valuable and needed, Lisa.

Mary — Your blog has served as a coach for me and many others I’m sure. Even when you fall in a ditch and climb back out, you’re providing readers/writers with insight on how to keep going.

Thanks, that’s encouraging to hear, Patti.

My coaching has come from books and blogs I read, but I would rather have the personal touch too.  I’m not sure how to pursue a coach.  Can you give any suggestions? I loved the idea of an advisory board and prayer team.  That could be a place for me to start.

Yes, the personal touch really helps. A prayer team will REALLY bless you! As will an advisory board.

Mary I couldn’t agree with you more. It was my own experience with a coach for my goals with writing a book that later inspired me to go to school to become a coach myself.  Having an unbiased set of eyes that are aware of where you have been, what you have done, your struggles and the heart and soul of where you are going and why is invaluable. They cheer you on when you need it, help you evaluate your stumbles along the way to achievement and give you the proverbial kick in the pants when you need it and in a way that you are open to it.  To have friends that do what people pay good money for is a true blessing from God.

Wow! Yes, I so agree, Karen.

I’ve been praying for a coach mentor for years. I can easily rant about my lack thereof, so I’m just going to make a note to keep praying and hope God connects us soon.

It’s a blessing to hear how great it is to have a relationship with someone who sees your potential and pours into your life. Amen to that!

    • http://www.marydemuth.com Mary DeMuth

Yes, amen to that. And often God would answer my prayer for a mentor in surprising ways. May He answer similarly.

Hm, I’ve been thinking I need a coach. I notice I’m very adept at helping/coaching others but I’m struggling personally (especially business-wise) and it would probably do me good to seek the same kind of insight I’m willing to offer others.

It has helped me so much, Dianne!

This is a GREAT message. I’ve been so independent my whole life that my mom actually took me to the doctor NUMEROUS times as a kid b/c she didn’t think I liked ANYBODY. The Doc just said I was very independent and was fine by myself.

As I got older, I found I need CERTAIN people in my life. I’ve also found that when I try to do EVERYTHING on my own I screw up ROYALLY!

Fortunately, I’m an learning to rely on God more and more (He’s MUCH better at managing and handling my life than I am… funny how that works…). I am also learning that being part of a community of like minded individuals is VERY beneficial to all involved.

I am now part of a Group of Super Awesomeness that meets weekly, and a friend and I have started another group for ideas, encouragement, and accountability (currently looking for a few additional members). Now, I’m looking to start a local small business association that could meet every few weeks or monthly to share ideas, get to know each other, and drum up business.

A personal coach is the one thing I have not had yet. Not officially. Unofficially, I devour anything by Justin Lukasavige, check out this post referring to what I’ve been doing on his site here: http://www.coachradio.tv/ivan-is-getting-free-coaching-and-you-can-too

However, coaching is on the agenda for 2012. Even 2011 if revenues pick up like I’m hoping after the full time launch of A Better Way of Business.

Great post, Mary. Keep sharing what’s in your head. I NEED to know it!

    ~Ivan

      Yes, I have heard that’s a great group. :)

Good that you’ll be coached in 2012. I see big things coming your way.
