When a man says he’s sorry on behalf of those boys

I’d given my book Thin Places to the people at my table group at Cape Town. Towards the end of the 8-day conference, one of the men in my group approached me. “I’ve been reading your book,” he said. “And I’d like to talk to you.”

We sat away from the hubbub. He told me God had been prompting him to say something to me and that he’d learned over his years with Jesus it was better to obey. He found that those promptings were God-breathed.

And then he said those words.

“On behalf of all men, I apologize for what those boys did to you.”

My heart stopped.

He continued to say how wrong those boys were, how violating, and that as a man, he felt the weight of their sin. “I am sorry,” he said.

His words washed a dark part of my heart, an angry, helpless part. His words shed light on a corner I’ve tried not to linger in. That places of devastation, innocence stolen. He asked if he could pray for me.

I nodded.

I don’t remember the words of his prayer, but I remember the way they made me feel. Cleansed. Heard. Validated. All the opposite things I felt thirty-eight years ago when those boys stole my dignity under tall evergreens. I was so young to lose it all.

Five.

Years.

Old.

And now at forty-three, I’ve heard the tenor of grace from my new friend’s mouth. “I am sorry.”

All I can do is fall on my knees, thanking the God who loves me enough to prompt a man to say such words. Thank You Jesus. Thank You.

I think this man was truly led of God. I can see how a word like that would touch a place never touched before. Like Jesus taking the guilt of our sins, this man stood in place of those who were guilty and gave the visible apology you’ve never been able to receive.

What a lovely thing to say!

I agree. And so freeing for me. I’m so glad he took the risk.

oh my … that must have been a ‘heart’ moment… a time where the little girl inside says ‘oh please hear me’… and a time when it is ok to say ‘thank you’ for understanding.

It was surreal and so healing.

What healing words!!! Reading them makes my heart stop too. It’s amazing to hear of a man understanding and apologizing for all men. His apology will touch many hearts through yours. What a man of God! There are many of us who would like to hear those words.

Wow, Mary! What an extra-special blessing! And isn’t that exactly what Jesus says to us, too? Can’t you just see Jesus pressing us to His heart as His tears cleanse our wounds? Jesus says, “Oh my precious child, I am so, so sorry this happened to you.”

Yes, I know that too. Great reminder, Trudy.

Wow! What an incredible moment. I love that God met you in such an unexpected way, in such an unexpected place, at such an unexpected time. He saw the part of your heart you couldn’t linger in and out of the depth of His profound love for you, He responded. Thank you for sharing this moment. It reminded me that the Father is ever present and will meet us even when we aren’t expecting Him

Oh my goodness, Mary. This is so amazing. God is so amazing. I have never been through what you’ve been through, but right now I feel the grace that you experienced washing over me. I am in tears over this, and I am praising God for His goodness to you. Thank you so much for sharing this.
