Jesusy Growth, Write!

Whose Name on the Book Gets the Glory

Whose Name on the Book Gets the Glory

I sang the words, “Glorify your name” this Sunday at church. I meant them. And then I thought about God’s name: Yahweh, Jesus, Holy Spirit. The triune God. His name, His character infuses the Bible. He is the author, the writer, the initiator of all things. He writes the book. And since He writes it, He gets the glory for it.

It made me think about the books I write. My prayer is that they are so infused with His ways that He seems to be the author. I hope His name graces the stories, the explanations, the tenets. I hope His character is evident throughout the words I write.

But even more than that, I’d love it if people saw Him when they see me. That they see the Author of my life in full glory. That my life wouldn’t be about pointing to the mere words and ramblings of my life, but about pointing to the One who has saved me in every way.

All this thinking about books and authors and The Author led me to Revelation.

Revelation 20:12-13

“And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.”

There is a very important book that I want to be in: the Book of Life, the Book God has authored in lives redeemed. His name is all over that book, how He writes each person’s story (who is willing to let Him author it), how He gave life for each life represented. Whether you write a book in this lifetime, what’s more important is whether God has written your life, whether, at the end of time, you will hear from His mouth, “Well done good and faithful servant.”

Are you in His book of life?

How is He writing your story?

Amen! I’m thankful to be in that book of life. I too hope that my writing as well as my life bring glory to God. Come to think of it…I do tend to ramble about my life a lot lately…..I hope that somewhere in there people see the Lord at work!

    I love this.

I read recently in Chan’s book “Forgotten God” the reminder that it says in Matthew that our “good works” should result in others “glorying God,” and not ourselves. He posed the question that if people saw a good work out of our lives, and didn’t glorify God, then maybe the Holy Spirit wasn’t really the one prompting the work in the first place. Ouch.

It’s seems so easy in the blogging/writing world to be focused on making a name for yourself, and not one for Him.

I love that you gave the reminder of Whose Book matters most. Thanks for that.

Yes! I so want God glorified in my writing – that even in my fiction they would be drawn to Him because of the imperfect characters struggling with their faith in authentic ways (kind of an oxymoron isn’t it – authentic struggles in fiction?). My non-fiction too — I want them to see Christ and that persevering through the pain of life circumstances for HIS glory is worth it! Only the Holy Spirit can infuse the writing He leads us to – but it is definitely my prayer as well! Keep shining His light Mary!

Beautiful post, Mary. I pray, too, that others would not see me but Him and that they wouldn’t see words that point to me, but that point only to Him. I love your heart for our King!
