BEST EVER Quirky MOVIES

8 Comments 15 August 2008

A few weeks back I talked about Children of Men as a movie I wouldn’t see again. Now I want to hear about your absolute favorite movies. But here’s the catch: please try to name your QUIRKIEST favorite movies. Here’s my eclectic list:

  • Strictly Ballroom (oh how I love the Australian love story!!! And the quirkiness!)
  • The Music Box (Jessica Lange is fab.)
  • House Sitter (When Steve Martin sings Toolaroolaloora–however that’s spelled–I nearly peed my pants).
  • Antwone Fisher (That last scene with his mother makes me sob and grieve and heal)

OK, what are your quirky faves and why?

"The Emperor's New Groove" – one of the most quotable and hilarious movies ever.

"Ah! I know! I'll turn him into a flea, a harmless little flea. Then I'll put that flea in a box, and put that box in another box, and I'll mail that box to myself, and when it arrives – aaahahahaa! – I'll smash it with a hammer!" << The most inspiring sort of villainess.

“Joseph – King of Dreams” is one of my faves (not so much quirky as just not one you’d think of watching because it is animated and one would think it is geared toward a younger audience). The song, “You Know Better Than I… I’ve Let Go the Need to Know Why,” always makes me cry. Watch it if you haven’t!

My d-i-l and I LOVE Strictly Ballroom. The guys run when we get it out for another go.

All-time (21st century) favorite quirky movie–O Brother, Where Art Thou?

    I am a very “sick” person :-)

Of course, I love many non-quirky movies, too!

I agree with one of your reader’s choices: Waking Ned Devine. I also loved Weekend at Bernie’s and What About Bob?

  • Margo Carmichael

“Lost in Translation.” Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanson have a platonic friendship in Tokyo. He is understated and just wonderful.

Warning: When she says “Charlie wants to meet us at a place called ‘Orange,’” hit a button called Fast Forward, because it’s a short scene in a vulgar dance club. They don’t stay. Wish they had left it out.

But I love the rest of it. Not many do, LOL

Waking Ned Devine. Irish quirk is the best quirk of all!!

BTW, my father sang Tooraloora on a regular basis. Like, while eating breakfast. You can’t take the Irish out of the boy. :)

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels tops the list for me. Never seen Strictly Ballroom but maybe I need to!

Ooh, I love Strictly Ballroom (but frankly have seldom found another person who's even heard of it :) I also happpen to adore Cary Grant comedies, which certainly isn't the norm (My Favorite Wife, Monkey Business, & The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer would be my top 3). And I'd have to say that Mel Brooks flicks are kind of a quirky, guilty pleasure. Men in Tights makes me laugh every time! (now if only his humor wasn't quite so crude…)
